Sunshine and the Storm Track
With school only three short days away (can I get a woo hoo?), we were determined to get one last beach day in. I actually had the kids packed and loaded into the van by ten. Take a moment to appreciate that, because under normal circumstances we rarely make it out before noon.
Really we couldn’t have asked for a better day.
There wasn’t a cloud in the sky, the water was calm and clear, seagulls flew passively overhead, tiny silver fish swam at our feet, occasionally nibbling at our toes (which felt just as weird as it sounds). It was warm but peaceful. Until about noon when it was sweltering. Around two the water was a scalding bath, the sand seared the bottom of our feet as we darted from the water’s edge to our shoes. By the time we left at 2:30 we all looked withered, our skin a sticky mess of sunblock and salt water. There was sand in every available crevice. Every kid groaned with a different complaint.
It was a good time.
Then we caught wind of this after we got home.
Needless to say we are not prepared. We’re stocked to capacity with school supplies - crayons, pencils, safety scissors, college ruled paper, glue sticks galore. But storm supplies…not so much. I think there is some tuna in the pantry. And we’ve got Gatorade, can’t forget the Gatorade.
We are currently within the cone of uncertainty aka the projected path aka the triangle of death. Hopefully Fay won’t strengthen too much, or cause too many headaches. Although after the season we had in 2005, all it takes is one stiff wind and we lose power for a week. In the blazing humid heat of a South Florida summer, living without a/c for even one night is…well your soul dies just a little, gets smothered actually. It’s no fun.
Then there’s always the possibility that school will get cancelled on the very first day. I shudder just thinking about it.
Time to watch the weather.
