Battling Beetles AKA The Pantry Wars
Originally my title was going to be Good vs. Weevil, but upon further research I discovered that the infestation in my kitchen cabinets were not of the weevil variety, but something called a drugstore beetle.
This is what they look like even closer up.
Here’s something I didn’t know about drugstore beetles. They fly! How horrifying is that?
I’ve been finding them here and there in my cupboards, so after a trip to BJs today, I decided to clean out the cabinets and the pantry in the hopes of finding out where they’d set up camp before I stored my eight boxes of pasta.
Well, mission accomplished. They had an insect resort set up in a container of Nestle Quik. Another very posh getaway inside a package of self-rising flour. A budget friendly inn tucked within a box of graham cracker crumbs. And the more irresponsible bugs had trashed a box of orzo and simply just left the hollow pasta grains, along with the casualties of their shameful partying.
I’ve been at it since the kids got home from school. Dumping boxes of dry goods and vacuuming the stragglers. My pasta is in the freezer because I’m terrified to put it anywhere they could potentially get to. These things are nasty, they can chew through anything. So the next few days are going to involve me and a shop vac hunting the kitchen for signs of survivors.
If that doesn’t work, I’ll have to invest in a whole lot of air tight containers. These suckers are gross, if I find even one in my hair I’m going to need serious therapy.
Ugh.
